Clinical trials: Spinal Cord Injury and Disease (SCI/D)Anabolic Steroid Therapy on Pressure Ulcer Healing in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury CSP #535
Principal investigator: Dr. Vidya Jayawardena, MD Purpose: To determine whether SCI inpatients with a stage 3 or 4 pressure ulcer of the pelvic region who are randomized to erceive 24 weeks of optimized clinical care (i.e., guideline driven care with nutritional support) and an oral anabolic steroid agent (oxandrolone) will have a greater percent of healed pressure ulcers than those who receive placebo and the same standards of clinical care. This is a 5 year prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Echocardiographic Imaging and Function of Cardiac Performance in Spinal Cord Injury and Non-Spinal Cord Injury Adults
Principal investigator: David R. Gater, MD; PhD. Purpose: The propose of this study is to demonstrate that the lack of compensatory mechanism in the SCI patients contributes to changes in cardiac functioning that dangerously worsens the intolerance to orthostatic maneuvers in these patients compared with able-body subjects when cardiac functional variables are measured and compared with echocardiogram.

Retrospective Analysis in the Incidence of Metabolic Syndrome in Spinal Cord Injury Population at the McGuire Veterans Hospital
Principal investigator: David R. Gater, MD; PhD Purpose: The objective of this retrospective review is to assess the incidence of metabolic syndrome in the SCI population at the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The information collected will be processed to recognize metabolic abnormalities in individuals with SCI and used as a first step in improving clinical care.

Standing And Transfers After SCI With An Implanted Neuroprosthesis
Principal investigator: David R. Gater, MD; PhD. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to implement and evaluate quantitatively the first generation CWRU/VA implanted neuroprosthesis for standing and upright mobility after spinal cord injury (SCI) in a small-scale Phase II multicenter trial. The goal of this study is to complete a small scale multicenter trial of the implanted FES system for standing and transfers that will enable clinicians at collaborating centers to reproduce the preliminary outcomes attained with local subjects, which indicate safety, stability of the implanted components, achievement of baseline functions, and user satisfaction.
