Description:
Five 18-65 y.o. individuals with T6 and above motor complete (ASIA A&B) tetraplegia/paraplegia will be recruited to participate in a baseline-controlled, prospective, study to assess the impact of a 16-week exercise intervention on selected fitness parameters in adults with SCI. Primary outcome measures will include change in per cent body fat by 4-compartment modeling, while secondary outcomes will include insulin sensitivity, glucose effectiveness, and lipid profiles (Total Cholesterol: HDL-c) determined before and after the 16-week exercise interventions. Subjects will be assigned to either FES LCE on an ERGYS 2 ergometer (Therapeutic Alliances, Fairborn , OH ) or voluntary ACE with a Monark 881E ergometer ( Stockholm , Sweden ) exercise groups based on their degree of upper extremity motor and sensory function.
