Program cores

VCU-CERSE is a consortium coordinated by the VCU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and partially supported by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS). It is the result of a close alliance of the VCU Schools of Medicine, Allied Health, Engineering, Education, and DRS. The breadth and depth of expertise within VAMC/CERSE allows it to pursue a wide range of research, education, training, and leadership development related to disabilities across the lifespan.

Research Cores

At the heart of VCU-CERSE are the following Research/Training components:

  • Children and Disability: leading development of clinical, advocacy, research, education, and service expertise related to children and disabilities.

  • Health and Human Performance: focusing on the evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiopulmonary and/or neuromusculoskeletal injury and disease, including degeneration.

  • Rehabilitation Engineering: engaged in the design, development, and utilization of state-of-the-art human technology interfaces in the operation of assistive technologies, including eye- and head-tracking controls, motion-activated controls, voice-activated controls, and related activities.

  • Rehabilitation of Neurological Illness and Injury: committed to advanced scientific research and training relating to persons with brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other forms of trauma that have a major effect on the central nervous system.

  • Veterans: dedicated to improving rehabilitation processes and outcomes for veterans, especially those with amputation and neurological conditions such as SCI, TBI, and Parkinsons disease.

  • Vocational Rehabilitation: devoted to the study, research, training and demonstration of employment and disability policy related to individuals with disabilities.
