Health and Human Performance CoreEdmund Acevedo, Ph.D., director
The Health and Human Performance Core is an interdisciplinary unit with a focus on the evaluation and treatment of patients with cardiopulmonary and neuromuscular dysfunctions. Research programs in this core include the exploration of the mechanisms underlying these disorders, prognostic indicators and effectiveness of treatment interventions aimed at improvements in quality of life. The recently initiated doctoral program in Rehabilitation and Movement Science (VCUs Department of Health and Human Performance, Department of Physical Therapy and Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) and the diverse training programs within all this cores collaborators form the cornerstone of training activities for the CERSE. This core consists of faculty with expertise in balance disorders, orthopedic interventions and evaluations, cardiopulmonary assessments, neurological disorders, vestibular dysfunction, and effectiveness of physical rehabilitation interventions. These research endeavors build on our existing funding through federal (NIH) and private sources. Departments in the schools of Medicine (PM&R, Orthopaedics), Allied Health Professions (PT, OT, Rehabilitation Counseling), Engineering (BME) and Education (HHP) are active collaborators in the Health and Human Performance Core with several fully operational labs. This core provides a foundation for understanding movement disorders through transdisciplinary research, contributing to the overall mission of CERSE. Content associated with this core:
